Conquering Sugar Cravings

Do you ever get that 3:00pm urge for something sweet?  Or want that bowl of ice cream at 7:30 in the evening?  Sugar cravings are often unconscious habits we’ve developed.  Maybe you’ve always went to chocolate when you’re stressed, maybe you grab a couple of M&M’s when you’re bored.  You may have been brought up to always have desert after dinner or ice cream at 8:00.  Be it a true craving or habit here are a couple of tricks you can use to help bust those cravings.

1.    Remove the sugar from the house or at the very least don’t have it front and center.  A bowl of candy sitting front and center on the center island is more tempting than a bag of candy sitting in the back pantry.

2.    Start the day with a solid breakfast. The less sugar you eat in the morning, the more balanced you will be all day. High-protein breakfasts have been shown to help reduce sugar cravings.

3.    Plan your meals in advance so you don’t go too long between meals to prevent dips in blood sugar.  This also helps you avoid those “I’m starving and haven’t eaten” binges.

4.    Drink lots of water or herbal teas throughout the day.  Being dehydrated can trick your body into thinking it wants something sweet. When you’re craving something sweet, drink a glass of water.  If after a few minutes, you still want something sweet, eat a quarter or half of what you were going to eat and drink another glass of water.  You may find the craving goes away.

5.    Distract yourself for a few minutes.  When I think I’m about to eat something I don’t really want to eat, I call my dog Jax over. He then keeps me busy for a few minutes… and then some!

6.    Avoid artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, saccharin and sucralose, which are very sweet and can trigger sugar cravings.

7.    Trick yourself by eating something sour when you want something sweet. The sour flavor can stimulate the taste buds and take the sugar cravings away.

Whether it’s a craving or habit, sugar is hard to give up.
